Georgia GAPP Home Care: A Parent’s Guide to Getting Started

When a child needs extra medical support, finding care at home can feel overwhelming. Georgia families may hear about the Georgia Pediatric Program, often called GAPP, but still wonder where to begin. This guide explains the program’s purpose and how to prepare for a conversation with a provider.

What is Georgia GAPP?

The Georgia Department of Community Health describes GAPP as a program for medically fragile children with multiple system diagnoses. Services are provided in homes and communities. They include skilled nursing services and personal care support with activities of daily living.

Those are different kinds of support. Nursing addresses needs requiring skilled professional care. Personal care focuses on daily activities. A child’s diagnosis alone does not tell a family which services will be approved; the child’s individual needs and applicable program requirements must be reviewed.

How do families begin?

Georgia Medicaid directs families to contact a GAPP provider agency directly to apply for services. The department also points families to Appendix U of the GAPP provider manual on the GAMMIS website for nursing agencies.

If you are exploring pediatric home care in Georgia, contact a provider and explain what your child needs help with. Ask how the agency reviews eligibility, what information it needs, and who can explain the next steps. An initial conversation is not the same as service authorization.

Prepare for the first conversation

Make a short list of your child’s current care needs and the daily routines that are hardest to manage. It can help to have the child’s Medicaid information, treating clinician’s contact details, and any existing care instructions available. Ask the agency which records it actually requires and how to provide them securely.

  • What nursing or personal support needs should we discuss?
  • What documents are required for the review?
  • How are services and hours determined?
  • Does the agency serve our area, and what staffing is available?
  • Who will keep us informed during the process?

Eligibility and availability are separate questions

A family may need both a program eligibility review and a discussion of provider availability. Do not assume a website form guarantees approval, a particular number of hours, or an immediate start date. Ask the provider to explain each step and any waiting-list arrangements.
